Everything you ever wanted to know
about Amethyst… and then some!
February's Gem

<-- from page 1

Amethyst is loved by Tibetan Buddhists, as they believe it promotes clarity of mind during meditation and prayer.

In New Age circles, amethyst signifies uplifting spirituality and contentment. According to crystal healers, those who wear it are blessed with stability, strength, and the kind of peace which was present prior to birth. The gem is believed to give courage and attract favors from those in high places, so it couldn’t hurt to carry an amethyst when you ask your boss for a raise.

Some say the metaphysical powers of amethyst enhance psychic abilities and protect the wearer against evil. Gemstone Therapists use it as a sleep-aid that promotes restful slumber and protection from nightmares. Believers in crystal magic claim that placing a small amethyst under your pillow will reduce snoring… if anyone has success with this, please let us know!

Although it may look extravagant, amethyst is widely available and affordable. In the hands of a talented craftsman, even a modest gem becomes a feature in an elegant and stunning piece that makes a big statement. For beautiful custom amethyst jewelry that reflects your personality, work with a designer who can craft a piece that is uniquely yours.

Amethyst can be found in beautiful antique jewelry. Most notable are gems of a pale shade of lilac known as “Rose de France.” The delicate color is well suited in ornate Victorian pieces such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and hair accessories.

Nola Doubet Hendry of Carl Doubet, Jr. Jewelers in Greenville, Delaware tells us that amethyst frequently appeared in jewelry designs in the 1930’s and 40’s. “During World War II, an alloy added to gold gave the metal a pink hue. Purple amethyst complimented the color of the gold, and the gem became a popular accent during that period.”

Proper care of your amethyst will insure its indefinite beauty. Ideally, pieces should be stored in a soft cloth bag when not worn. Although amethyst is a relatively hard gem that withstands normal wear, it should be protected from sharp blows. Amethyst may fade if exposed to prolonged direct light, so it is a bad idea to wear amethyst while sunbathing or using the tanning bed. Contact with heavily chlorinated water, like swimming pools or spas, should be avoided. Extreme heat or cold and sudden changes in temperature can harm the gem. Clean amethyst pieces with mild soap and lukewarm water or, better yet, bring them to a jeweler to have them professionally cleaned using ultrasound.
